31 Aug Senate Leader’s Constituency Projects Hits N7 Billion
Excluding the trans-African Highway and Ajasor- Okimi-Okoroba-Calabar Road, constituency projects attracted by the Senate Leader, Chief Victor Ndoma-Egba to Cross River Central Senatorial District have collectively gulped N7 billion.
He revealed this yesterday in an interview with newsmen shortly after inspecting projects completed or undergoing implementation in the six Local Government Areas of his constituency.
The senator interfaced with Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) at the federal level to intervene in his constituency with development projects once approval was given by the relevant authorities. These projects include roads, dams, electrification, erosion control works, schools, and health institutions spread across the various communities of Yakurr, Obubra,
Abi, Ikom, Boki and Etung Local Government Areas.
Work on some of the projects facilitated by him commenced in 2007 and is progressing steadily even as he expressed disappointment with the level of implementation by some of the contractors who he has no direct control over.
“The quality of job on most of the projects is good. Do not forget that I was once a Commissioner of Works. The moment I see a project and if I am not satisfied I begin by making my observations about it”, he said.
He maintained that most communities in his constituency have problems of potable water but with the intervention projects through various MDAs, some benefiting communities in Idomi, Apiapum, Ediba, Mkpani, Ogada, Akam, Akparabong that never had water for years can now enjoy.
He said some projects in his constituency had been abandoned owing to the nature of the award as some of the contracts were awarded to contractors from faraway places instead of the indigenes for easy access and monitoring.
The Senate Leader decried the poor nature of federal roads in the state saying the roads were so bad because they were not given to reputable contractors for rehabilitation.
He advised the Federal Government to ensure that contracts for major federal roads in the state like the Calabar-Ikom-KatsinaAla and the Calabar-Itu highways are awarded to Julius Berger and other reputable road construction firm for a better work.
